Child/Adolescent Clinic and PATC, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX
Size: 10,300 sf

Working from a program focused on building a creative, uplifting and reassuring environment to support the healing of the hospital's youngest patients, the final design of MD Anderson's Child/Adolescent Clinic and Pediatric Ambulatory Treatment Center provided colorful treatment rooms and nurses' stations intended to make the patient experience less threatening. Careful planning allowed for expansion in the number of exam and treatment rooms in the center and larger procedure rooms in the clinic. Everything in the final design, from detailing to materials and colors, was approached from the children's point-of-view. A children's play area adjacent to the waiting area was made possible through a generous donation from the Houston Astros In Action Foundation. The final playroom design incorporated scaled-down architectural references to the Astros' Minute Maid Park assembled in playful combinations. A batter's box, baselines and grassy outfield, created in durable resilient flooring, completed the baseball theme.
