Omega Protein hired Wilson Architectural Group to help find solutions for their growing Corporate Offices and new Food Laboratory in Houston, Texas. When hurricane Katrina hit the Louisiana and Mississippi Gulf Coast regions in 2005, destroying Omega's operations in those regions, it was decided to relocate portions of those operations to Houston. So, during the construction document phase a significant challenge developed: the project doubled in size bringing the lease space to 21,000 square feet. Within three weeks Wilson Architectural Group redesigned, produced and issued construction documents incorporating the new requirements.
New furnishings and the re-use of existing were a big consideration in planning the offices. It not only helped with keeping the project cost down, but also established office standards. Oversized, refinished and reupholstered existing furniture went into the larger sized Vice President offices, and new system-furniture was planned in smaller offices and open area.
The second phase was the construction of the 6,500 square foot laboratory. In addition to the traditional laboratory environment, testing rooms and marketing areas were part of Omega's requirements. Although the actual start of construction was delayed due to funding, construction began in September 2006 and was completed by the end of that year.
