Family and Community Medicine, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX
Size: 36,000 sf

Encompassing 36,000 square feet of space, Baylor College of Medicine's Department of Family and Community Medicine was renovated to consolidate training, administration, and patient care areas under one roof. Offices were previously divided between three buildings, several blocks apart, which ultimately proved unworkable. The new facility supports the most current thinking regarding patient interaction and interpersonal patient care. The spaces are restrained and express a subtle Eastern influence utilizing a warm palette of materials. The use and manipulation of light was key in forming the public and patient areas. Administrative areas and offices have exposure to direct daylight while public and patient areas are illuminated using reflected light. Extra time and attention was given to reworking, reupholstering, and the reconfiguration of furnishings to assure that a consistent, seamless appearance was achieved throughout.
